75
YEARS OF HISTORY OF THE LEXINGTON KIWANIS CLUB
Forty charter members attended the organizational meeting
of the Lexington Kiwanis Club on November 23, 1925, and the Charter
was formally presented on January 3,1926. Dr. James Lewis Howe was
the first President and Colonel James A. Anderson , the first
vice-president.
Our Club just celebrated its seventy-fifth
anniversary which was
the occasion for much reminiscing about the activities and services
to
the community, and for remembering past members many of whom
were a veritable Who's Who of leaders in Lexington and Rockbridge
County. The variety of fund raising projects and charities over the
years
is truly impressive.
Membership has been maintained at approximately forty since
inception of the Club, although sadly , eight of our members have
passed away in the past few years. In their memory an annual
contribution is made to the Rockbridge Regional Library, and a
plaque recognizes their years of service to the club and to the
community. The purpose of the gifts is to enhance the collection and
activities for the young patrons of the library.
The Lexington Kiwanis Club is in the 5th Division of the Capitol
District which also includes Clubs in Charlottesville, Harrisonburg,
Staunton, Verona, Waynesboro, Clifton Forge and Covington.
